“Wonder-ful” left me uncomfortable and off-balance in terms of the dynamic in the choir room when members of the old New Directions come back as “mentors.” I end up feeling badly for the seniors because Blaine, Tina, Artie, Sam (and Brittany, though she wasn’t in this episode) were members of the national champion team, but that always seems to get ignored (see: “Thanksgiving” when Finn calls the gathered group of graduates “legends”).

But more than that, the old ND functioned in a completely different way than the new ND does, and the two dynamics do not mesh.

I agree and disagree on several levels. I agree with the analyze of the dynamics, to an extent, and disagree with the sentiments - because focusing on glee club (the old ones) as a group before competitions and in episodes that revolve around competitions is not the same as referring to them as a group in any other times.
